How long does it take to grow a beard?

As it gets a little cooler, some guys might be starting to crave the comfort of one of nature's good old face-beanies - i.e. a beard. However, those who have tried and failed before will tell you that growing a beard isn't always easy. Some quit once they start looking like a D-grade porn star with a bad moustache and not much on the chin. Others have more practical reasons for throwing in the towel, such as skin irritation caused by nasty in-grown hairs. However, there are few joys as great as looking at a strong and well-groomed beard in the mirror, so that's why we have put together these handy tips so that you can truly enjoy the fruits of your follicle labour in as little time as possible.

1. Week 1: Don't expect it to be pretty.

Well, at least not from the start. While some may be beard-erly blessed and can seemingly sprout a luscious face patch overnight, others amongst us are not so lucky. When it comes to beard hair vs. head hair, it's a complicated game. There is most certainly an ugly phase when growing a beard that you need to push through. You might have patchy facial hair, but if you can be patient for around 7-10 days, even the most stubborn beards will start to fill out. While you are looking like you're having strange-wars with your razor, make sure to dress a little sharper, and style your hair to offset your appearance to your superiors and loved ones.

2. Week 2-4. Resist the urge to trim!

You might be thinking that your beard is improving and could do with a little tidy up, but do not give in to your temptations. It is best to let your beard gain its full natural shape before you start chipping away at it. For some people, this might take as little as a month, for others, it can take more. When to start trimming a beard? We say wait AT LEAST four weeks before you start trying to play Edward Scissorhands.

One key reason many beards fail is that the pores and hair follicles get clogged and the newly bearded man can't stand the itch, and can sometimes even end up with an infection. It is important right from the start to keep a good beard cleaning

regime to avoid irritation and inflammation. Use a deep face scrub to clean the pores and restore moisture.

Of course, there is no simple answer to the question 'how long does it take to grow a beard?', but if you keep these things in mind, the process will be much more enjoyable, and you will be enjoying those smooth lumberjack vibes sooner rather than later.
